I was investigating a battery drain on the boat. I found an unknown (by me) WiFi network that seems to be around whether I am at my marina or anchored somewhere. The SSID is "NEXX_a233C2" and its been up for 87 days and some odd number of hours. I've turned off the inverter and outlets on the boat (to make sure its not the PepWave router I installed on the boat). That would seem to indicate its off the 12V circuits. There is no password required, so I can connect to it. When I connect to the IP address of the router via a browser, I get the attached screen. Anyone know what could be publishing this SSID? |

My boat came with one of these as well.
Far as I can tell it’s a low budget WiFi booster that has no critical utility.

Did you find out where it was located physically? I'd like to disconnect it, or double check its connections. In any case, I need to have it stop broadcasting a hot-spot as that is killing battery life. Outside of the GOFREE B&G thing, I have a WIFI router on the boat, but its AC powered and I have a remote control which has "2", "4", "6" and "8". hour buttons on it. If I am using the internet at night, I usually hit the 2 or 4 hours button so its not cranking a hot-spot out beyond that time. This thing has been up for 87 days! |

Do you have a Fusion sound system? We had a mini router like that connected to the Fusion so it could be remote controlled. I took it off and linked it to my main router.

Yes... I have a fusion sound system. And it has a remote control. But this hot spot is broadcast even when the fusion isn't powered. I'll check the manual. Good thought. |

On my boat the cheap router is mounted on the inside of a flat wood panel at the Nav station just above the B&G v50 radio.
Would be nice to run the Fusion system off WiFi. Wasn’t aware this was possible. |

Mine had power even when Fusion switched off. It will be something like this.
You could connect to it and do a port scan on the subnet. There are several apps that do that. even just an iphone will do. When you find an active address open the browser on that. See what equipment page comes up. These wifi routers can be quite small. matchbox sized. |

It is easy to remove the Fusion wifi access point. Then run an Ethernet cable from the socket on the Fusion to your main wifi router. It will need a spare socket on that. Then connect to the Fusion via that wifi rather than the standalone.
You can do the same with the B&G network. Plug the B&G Ethernet into your router too. That needs a special cable from B&G as they don’t use standard RJ45s. But if you do that then your B&G is permina tly connected to the Internet. You don’t need to switch modes on GoFree all the time.

Outstanding. I'll look for it when I am back on the boat. To be honest, I'm not sure I care about the fusion remote. I've not used it once in 3 years. Certainly not at the cost of needing to run wifi to have it. I have the cockpit remote and that seems to be enough. I don't believe the cockpit remote cares about the wifi network, so unless someone tells me otherwise I'll expect that to continue working... I may also call fusion and see what they say officially. Seems like a strange way to do a remote, as opposed to Bluetooth or just plain RF. |
