I went a long cruise recently and had a couple passages where we had to run the engine for hours and it occurred to me, I have no idea how to check the engine temperature. No idea if I am over heating or anything. I fiddled around with the panel that shows the hours, but I could not find a way to display more engine information.
1) How do I get an engine temp reading? 2) Is there any way to add more engine management modules to report over the MFD at the helm things such as fuel flow rate, range, fuel levels, etc...? |

Hi Marc,
Yacht Devices YDEG-04 engine gateway connects your D2 to NMEA2000. Our MFD shows D2:- - RPM - Hours - Battery voltage - Temperature Cannot see fuel flow, fuel levels, range etc. Cheers.

Marc,
Volvo have two option for data but I'm not sure they work with the D2. Certainly they work on the D3 which is a full electronic engine and designed by VP. The D2 is a "Volvoised " Perkins. The D2 and I guess the D1 have a MDI (Mechanical Diesel Interface) to let the Volvo system interface with these mechanical engines. There is a "Fuel Management" software add on for the D3 or higher engines. This gives liters burn rate, liters per NM, fuel used etc etc. This info appears on the Volvo start/stop screen. This fuel software is about Euro700 plus installation when we fitted it back in 2018. Not cheap. There is also a Dongle which Volvo sell which enables engine data to appear on you B&G (or other) MFD screens. The data (again on the D3 or higher) is oil temp, pressure, engine temp, etc. We found, by accident, that Hanse had fitted this dongle to our boat but no one told us. I was about to buy the dongle (about Euro200) and looked how to fit it and then saw the dongle in place.

I have also fitted the YDEG-04 and display the data on a customised version of the 'engine' screen on the old (2012) Simrad MFD. The display screen can be customised to include not only the data above but other data on the NMEA bus such as SOG, depth, wind etc. which are useful when motoring and avoid having to change screens. The device itself is simple plug and play but you will need a NMEA extension cable to connect the device in the engine bay to the NMEA backbone.
