Evening We took Sheila out for her shake down run on Friday afternoon having been out for a month being tidied out underneath, part of this was to clean out a number of zebra mussels which had become used to living in the sail drive water vents ! All was fine until we noticed some water coming from the engine bay, I had a quick look and noticed a drip drip coming from the hose leading from the vacuum valve (we keep a bottle to catch anything) on the raw water side (this is located up behind the engine bay between the cockpit and heads very difficult to get to, have undone the 2 bolts but cant pull off due to the restriction in space). My thoughts are, it a pressure issue, hence the drip, there is a good flow at all revs out of the exhaust and as its before to goes into the heat exchanger there may be a blockage due to some small fragments of shell which got past the strainers ?? The next job is to drop the coolant and clean the exchanger which I've not done yet then will look at the exhaust elbow if the exchange looks clean.. am I on the right lines ? Cheers Stu

The syphon breaking valve is most likely leaking.
After a lay-up salt crystals form between the small rubber flap and the bronze body. And the pressure of the exhaust [and the water injected in the exhaust flow] leaks and fills the catch bottle. Some owners fit the expensive larger Vetus replacement. I struggled to remove the valve [cutting the overlength bolts to make re-fit easyier, and cleaned the valve, fitting a new flap valve. The rubber of the flap valve is very thin and has a small 0.5mm ish hole which is a functional requirement. I tried to source the rubber everywhere to no avail, the Volvo price for valve was too rich for me. I finally sourced a kit somewhere in west country: I cant find them tonight but try Repower Marine about £3.60! http://repowermarine.com/index.php/seal-kit-for-volvo-penta-vacuum-valve-replaces-3818424.htmlFor All Engines Fitted with Volvo Penta Vacuum Valve:--- Replaces Volvo Penta: 3818424, 875738

Stu,
the old brazen vacuum valve from VP really sucks. The membran is the weak point. Fro approx. 100€ get the new replacement valve, made of plastic and no maintenance needed any more. On the one hand, the issue you mentioned is a bothering symptome, but on the other hand, a defective valve may cause real problems for your engine. The replacement is quite easy, just the distance between the wall mount screws are different. Link to the new one. Best Martin |

Hi Both
Thanks for the links, as a temp fix i've spent 3.60 on a new flap but will look at a new valve in the coming years as its in the most inaccesable location so will look at moving it.
Cheers

... tks for appreciation. But have an eye on it to avoid a hydrostatic lock, when the valve fails...

Just a quick update, replaced the vacuum valve gaskets and membrane, worked a treat. Couldn't get the drain valve bolt undone so it put stop to the rest of my plans but had great flow from the exhaust at all revs so quite happy all is OK at the moment but will have a look soon. Thanks for the help Cheers Stu |
