Our 430e is in Trabbie blue and gets compliments every where we go, even with the faded bow gel coat. Yachts are for sailing not for polishing and looking at. Spend the money on making it go faster, easier to sail or have better power management and be proud of your Hanse.

Ole,
There are now four products available from Awlgrip - Awlgrip (original)- high gloss, longer lasting, non buffable, difficult to repair. Suggested life 7-10 years (suggested by painters experienced in these products - depends of amount of care and maintenance and general UV conditions in your area and colour selected). Awlgrip HS - high solids - gives a very high, deep gloss + above. Awlcraft 2000 (original) - buffable, easy to repair. Suggested life 6-9 years. Awlcraft SE - Special effects system which is then overcoated with a clear finish. There is a large range of colours and finishes including metallics, pearl effect and special effects available. It appears the more "special" the finished product the more difficult it will be to repair. I know metallics and pearl effects are very diffilcut to repair successfully (so you cannot see the repair). "Pearl" is a finish where the colour looks different from different angles. So you can let your imagination go wild with colour and finish selection. Obviously there are owners who would like the best looking boat in the marina and then the owners who would rather spend more money/effort on making their boat go faster and then there is possibly the largest group of owners who would like to enjoy their boat and just want to do the least amount of maintenance. I would be interested to see what colour/effect/product you ultimately select for your boat. |

While on this topic does anyone have suggestions for UV protecting wax?

Phil,
I have tried lots and lots of polishes and waxes and currently I favour - for a new fibreglass boat- either 3M Ultra Wax (full name 3M Ultra Performance Paste Wax) or Awlcare. I have tried various "super" products that promise a fantanstic result with little work-guess whatthey don't seems to work all that well. I have tried various Canaubra waxes including some 100% Canaubra which were incredibly hard work. One particular "show car type" Canaubra wax is bought for $45 and used on a test patch of about 30cms square and found it so difficult I threw it straight in the bin after the test. Ultra Wax is widely available- Whitworths, Bias etc. It is longish lasting - about 6 months up in the sunny tropics. It is fairly easy to apply and polish. It costs about $A35 for a tub of 260 grams. A tub goes a long way as it goes on as a very thin film if applied correctly. Awlcare - A specialist product designed and produced for Awlgrip paints but seems to be equally good on gelcoat. Your may need to search the web for a supplier. Lasts as long as Ultra Wax. Very easy to apply and polish. Cost is around $A40 for 500ml. But 500ml goes a long way - probably 500ml would do your 385. I find if the polishing/waxing of your boat is easy you are more likely to do it. We slip our boats once a year and polish/Awlcare whilst on the slip and also once during the year. Enjoy the 385.

Appreciate your comments Wayne. Either the 3M product or Awlcare would do. I had seen the small 3M size but did not imagine that it would stretch far. If 500ml of Awlcare or even a litre would do the job then I will give it a go.
My previous boat was steel so I am learning as much as I can about FG. I completely agree with the commentators who have pointed out that sailing qualities outweigh cosmetics, polishing 2 times a year however, is surely reasonable for something we have so much pride in. To be honest I would have loved a coloured hull but went for practicality, anyway these are handsome vessels, to my eyes, whatever the colour. My 385 'Amity' is now leaving Durban in South Africa, aboard the RORO 'Tiger' for the final leg of its journey to Australia so our first sail in her is getting closer. |

I would appreciate your sending a copy of your list as it's getting to the point where we'll have to focus on all these sorts of issues. We are indeed importing through Windcraft Sydney, and they have been very professional in all our dealings with them, however it seems to me that you have to be on top of every issue yourself to ensure you get exactly what you want. That isn't a criticism, but sometimes it's necessary to do your own research. My email address is in my profile if that's easier. We'll need to get it right as soon as possible after handover, as our maiden voyage is from Pittwater to Westernport Bay - quite a journey. It will definitely be a good sha e down cruise!

Thanks for the info, Wayne!
Your product description is very helpful and the differences between the various types of Awlgrip/craft coatings actually makes it a bit difficult to choose. I have zoomed in on either standard Awlgrip or Awlcraft 2000. But I am still not sure which to choose. The boat yard that I have hired to do the job have their primary (and plenty) experience with Awlgrip so that would probably be the safe choice. On the other hand, the buffability and repairability of Awlcraft counts. @Ken I tend to agree with you and I would normally give top priority to the things that would actually make the boat sail and handle better, but by the end of this season I have somehow been hit by sudden depression over the poor condition of Amani's freeboard I know it is completely irrational to throw +5000k at a purely cosmetic operation![]() (The extra epoxy, new thru hulls and seacocks is, however, a much more rational investment) Ole, |

Hi skipper
That's very interesting information. (And this thread is getting more and more interesting). I noticed that a range of the colours are sprayed on afterwards and of the polyester urethane type just like awlgrip. What is more, I also noticed that the Dark Grey colour, which I think corresponds with the colour of Amani, is actually applied with spray and of the urethane type. In fact, I am not so sure anymore that the surface of Amani's hull is gelcoat! If urethane paint was applied during the period Amani was built (in 2005-6) I might even have ruined the paint myself by polishing it (I don't know since I took over Amani in 2009 with NO references or warnings concerning the paint).Alternatively the colour could correspond with the other grey colour displayed on the card. This is apparently gelcoat. Is there anyone out there who has an idea of what is up and down of this matter please come forward! Ole, |
