Why pressure (?) valve in primary cooling ?

   Dear fellow sailors.
During my last Norway trip after an extensive sailing period of 3 days with no engine, I ran out of cooling.

In the T-shaped tubing going from the seawater impeller pump to the heat exchanger there is kind of an overpressure valve (I guess...) that started leaking, so the impellor ran empty/dry and was no longer able to suck water.

I took the leaking part out and replaced it by a champagne cork :-)  Refilled and was fine...

Now 6 months later I am still doing fine with the champagne cork.

Is there anybody who can tell me the part number of this valve in the 3YM20 Yanmar primary cooling circuit and what it is needed for ?
