   Hi all,
I am currently servicing the electric winches on my 418. I can find requirements of the 
Lewmar website for the “above deck” components. Maintenance for these is to periodically disassemble, clean, grease and reassemble. I have been unable to find anything relating to the below deck gearbox other than to inspect periodically. I assume that the inspection is external only with no disassembly.  It seems that the intention is to run this component until something fails, then I assume replace.

Have others found any information about the below deck gearbox?

	Hi Gordon, As far as I could find, only the above deck part requires maintenance. Also in the conversion manual which has a chapter on Operations and Maintenance nothing is mentioned on the electric motor. 	Hi, we have two Evo 45 electric winches on Night Train, one of them has now jammed. i.e. the drum no longer rotates freely if you try to spin it by hand. I regularly service the winches using lewmar's much trumpeted 'no tools needed' method. But this seems to only apply to manual part of the winches, and like Gordon can find no instructions on the Lewmar website as to how to service the electric motor drive. The winch works fine electrically and will turn with a handle but with quite a lot of resistance. I am guessing that the drive shaft from the electric motor only connects to the winch cogs when you apply power to it and then a spring removes it after use, which probably just needs cleaning and lubricating. There are some big flat head screws in the base of the winch so that you can remove the whole thing, but I am not sure if the motor then drops out, or is this fixed with other bolts? Has anyone come across this and if so could you let me know how to service this bit Many thanks and stay safe Paul

	Paul, If you look at the manual above that Henk provided a link to there does appear to be a spring in the lower gear box. Before you remove the base it might be worth removing the above deck portion on both winches and run electrically, to see if there are differences in behaviour. If they are the same it is likely that the problem is above deck. Gordon

	Hi Gordon Thanks for that, I have tried both winches, one works normally and the other has the problems, definitely different. I hadn't looked at the link before, as the description seemed the same as the one I downloaded from Lewmar, but it is better in that it gives a full description. I will try taking it apart and seeing what the problem is Take care Paul

	Hi, I have now taken both of our electric winches apart and compared the power drive double pawl gears. One winch is used for the jib halyard and therefore probably has the most tension on it, on taking it apart one pawl fell out and there was no sign of the spring. This pawl can also just slide out of the recess rather than having to be slid in from the top. I have attached two photos, the first shows the two double pawl gears side by side, the lower left pawl is the one that can slide out horizontally, on the second photo you can see the scoring on the bottom part of the gear. I am guessing, but would think that one pawl spring broke, which meant all the load went onto one pawl causing the cog to move on the retaining pin?? I have regularly serviced the winches, but only as per the Lewmar instructions for manual winches. My fault for not trying harder to find out how to service the electric drive shaft and double pawl cog wheel as I could have saved myself a lot of money. But i am surprised how hard it is to find information on the electric winches and the fact that I had 4 copies of the technical detail booklet in my original handover pack, but none of the said how to service the electric winches. For the record to access the lower set of cog wheels you need to undo the 5 large flat head screws and lift up the bronze stem or casing. There are another set of bolts under this which hold the motor to the boat, so you don't need to worry that the whole thing is going to drop down. Once this is undone it annoyingly easy to clean and service the cogs, pawls and springs. All the best and stay safe Paul
