is it possible? has anyone done that?
next, how does the wing keel 301 sail in rough sea? I plan to go to Marroco... am i lookin for trouble?
thanks

Hi Erictigger.
Sorry cannot help personally with your beaching question but I heard of a wing keel 301 in England beaching succesfully between tides.Presumably he used legs(crutches) which would be quite short as the boat draws only just over a metre.
Re the sea going -we sail our wing keel 301 (French,Italian coasts,Corsica,Sardinia etc) and have great faith in her.She is well balanced and simple to handle tracking well even in rough seas.We certainly do not seek bad conditions but occasionally find them and experience of these give us confidence if not pleasure! Our worst seas have occurred off the west coast of Corsica(big big waves) and in the Bonifacio straights where the sea is maybe not as big but they are steep and short .A force 6 out at sea becomes an evil beast in the straights constrained between the mountains of Corsica and Sardinia and on two occasions we were caught out in Gulliver reefed right down and she took it in her stride unlike the crew who had urgent discussions over the merits of a camper van over a sailing boat. However we still have the boat!

David

Hi Erictigger, to answer your two questions, With regards the standing on keel with crutches, I asked a similar question - can you lean against a harbour wall at low tide, after our Admiral's comments, that basically confirmed my thoughts, my view is that it should be possable, but I have not actually checked it out, I must admit I was going to try the harbour wall later on in the year.

With regards to the performance of the wing keel, hmm this is still out for debate, some say it is as stiff as the ordinary fin keel, all I do know is that I agree with Gulliver, I have had no worries about being in heavy seas so far, I do not choose them, but I have been caught out once or twice in the Irish Sea.

we too have a wing keel on Morgelyn and as above we avoid rough weather but when we have been caught out we have been 100% confident in the boat and the handling has been excellent.

Sadly we will be selling her later this year, great boat will be sorely missed!

Hi Dave,

No, we are planning to emigrate to Canada next year, we will be gutted to lose her and had thought about taking her with us but we think we will probably buy something else out there as boats appear much cheaper that side of the pond and we would get something bigger.

We might try and find out how much it would cost to ship her out there as we have just spent thousands on new sails, major engine overhaul etc and she is in fantastic condition and very lightly used.

Vancouver being on the west coast it is not really practical to sail her out there!!

Regards
