My 460 is wintered afloat and despite my best efforts is still using too much power requiring shorepower every 2-3 weeks to keep the batteries healthy. I cannot disconnect the batteries as I want to leave the bilge pump in place. Does anyone have insight as to what is using this power so I can disconnect individual components and put the boat into deep sleep. Thanks

There are four sources of phantom power draw on my boat, a 505 from 2016, with circuits that are outside the battery switch as set up at the factory, including: the VHF radio, the shower sump pumps, the courtesy light adjacent the companionway steps descending into the cabin (unlikely this draws current if in the off position), and the bilge pump. Your set up may vary. Pull fuses to depower. Good luck.

This occurs when the battery main switch is off as well? Sometimes the monitoring system itself is the draw. |

I think there is another phantom worth mentioning (but I'm not on High Time to double check) and that is the battery to battery charger that keeps the bow thruster topped up. This can be a significant discharge over time even if the thruster battery is not badly discharged.

My diesel heater has a fuse in the battery compartment that can be removed in wintertime. For safety reasons (cooling down) the heater is not without power even when it is turned off. Since there is a capacitor present, it will use some battery power. Also my SSB radio has a capacitor. If you turn off everything that use 12V you can measure with your multimeter (Ampere) at all battery groups, between the unmounted thick +cable and the +pole on the battery if there still is consumption.

my 460 has power on Sentinel and AIS at all times. Maybe isolate your house batteries and install a dedicated 12v to the bilge pump. We have a power draw of 2 Amps with everything else turned off. We leave it on shore power to run a dehumidifier.
The factory power set up has been a nightmare so Im not surprised about your issues.

I didn't know about AIS always on. It must be this that is causing the problem as Sentinel draws very little I'm told. There must be the option of installing a power switch on the AIS power supply I would think. Will have a look.

The boat wiring is very simple: the battery positive connects to positive busbar. There are two cables that go from positive busbar to mainboard, one is marked "permanent" and is not controlled by battery switch. Another(very fat) cable goes to mainboard via battery switch. When you turn the switch off only the fat cable is disconnected, the cable marked "permanent" still connects to the mainboard powering VHF, bilge pump, black water tanks level indicators and possibly some other stuff. This is a safety feature to power critical components no matter what. The sentinel wiring also connects straights to the batteries, those are thin wires that can be easily located.
If the goal is to shut everything off with single battery switch, one needs to reroute the battery cable going to the battery switch first and then to positive busbar, in which case no power will be going from the battery to any component (except for sentinel but i am not 100% sure since I removed sentinel right after their default subscription expired and forgot about it). If the goal is to keep some critical components still powered, its more difficult task, one needs to decide whcih exacly components have to be powered with switch off. ![]() .. |

I agree with Marsella. But there is simpler way. Just decide which of the PERMANTLY ON devices that you want to disable and move their location to the SWITCHED section of the mother board, one by one. There are plenty of unused slots available on the SWITCHED section. Just be sure to move the corresponding fuse along with the red and black cables. The locations of all devices are shown in the schematics.
