Thank you Brent and et al. These comments are extremely useful. I am about to take possession of a new Hanse 458 next month in Newport, and I will use these items to ensure I have a comprehensive walk-thru.

been trying to estimate how many of us are out there.

My hull number is 284. There were quite a few of us who ordered during Hanse "last call" in the Fall. #276 just left for Newport yesterday aboard a freighter....I just missed it!

I keep my boat at New England Boatworks and the ships from Hanse bound for Newport unload right outside our marina. Stop by and say hi if we are there.

I rode out to the boat (you are allowed to do it or join your dealers team in doing so) and climbed the rope ladder up the side of the ship (about a 4-5 story building) and crawled all over the boat when it was on jackstands (even higher) on the deck of the ship. You need to make sure there is oil in the engine, coolant, fuel, battery for the thrusters, etc.. Usually fine, but who wants to find out the hard way? As luck would have it we were being lowered into a 22kts of wind on the windward side of the ship. Thrusters might be needed.

From there you jump (literally) from the deck of the freighter to the deck of your boat as its being lowered into the water. Bring a life jacket just in case :-)

The good news is that you can get pretty much anything done at NEB, Bristol Marine, or Hinckley. If you are leaving the area, decide whether things are better done where you will keep the boat or at the above shops.

Enjoy the experience. We did.

On the ship passing thru Newport. They actually offload in Portsmouth, about 5 miles North of Newport. (Usually)

In the straps on the freighter getting ready to be lowered. Quite a few differences from what we have now. The hull is white. The boom is standard. A few other things we chose to deal with here rather than in Greifswald.

As today: Black hull, bow protector for bridles and anchor chain (needed), roller furling boom and many other upgrades (like fresh water heads and a locally designed dinghy handling system).

Also, who did your bow protector?

Want one for ourselves and like the look of yours.

Maybe we can order one to be shipped

The 575 windows were standard, but I do like the way they disappear into the black awlgrip hull!

New England Boatworks made and mounted the bow protector as a winter project while it was on the hard. If you do it, make sure the steel is 4mm thick (at least) and be sure you have sufficient wrap-around to protect properly. Its worked well for us.

If its arriving at our marina, you might be able to have them do the measurements while its there, make it after you leave, and then ship it. Never hurts to ask.
