As you know by now…. I am the guy that always runs into issues with my Hanse 505.

  • Replacement of part of the flexiteek deck because of use of regular steel in stead of inox…. warranty
  • Autopilot failure (3 times and 3 costly repairs)….. expensive
  • New stays after 3 years of use….. expensive
  • 3 new B&G devices because of water inside the units…. expensive
  • Sail-drive issues with the oil drain plug… new lower shaft… expensive
  • All Lewmar deckhatches had to be replaced because of excessive corrosion…. expensive
  • Etc.

ALL of the above is the DIRECT result of work at the Hanse factory (I investigated every issue in detail and this is the conclusion: Hanse did not do a good job during the assembly of the yacht). And yes… most of that work is done by sub-contractors and not Hanse themselves… but still.. Hanse has the ultimate responsibility to deliver a quality product.

Lots of these issues only show up after the warranty period has ended. And lots of these issues are the result of lack of expertise during assembly or wrong decisions in the engineering phase.

But this last one is the straw that broke the camel’s back:

Since the first day we bought the boat I had some discoloration of the sail-drive oil. It looked a little like aluminum paint when you changed it. In 2018 (1.5 years old, 1500NM) we hauled the boat out in Athens and had a Volvo Penta mechanic look at it… his opinion: Water in the oil….just change the oil and water seals on the lower shaft and all will be fine…So we had them changed that same day.

After about 1 day of use the first signs of aluminum in the oil were back. With no other options… we decided to continue our trip to Curacao. There we took apart the lower end and discovered that somebody had tried to remove the lower shaft without first removing the drain plug… resulting in a broken magnet traveling through the lower end and damaging the gear. We replaced the lower shaft and the damaged gear and put in a new drain plug thinking this was the end of our problems.

Whose fault was this? It must have happened during assembly in Greifswald by the Volvo mechanic there. It was already missing in Athens, and the Volvo machanic did not notice…..So.. production error of Hanse

(I understand Hanse buys many VP engines/sail-drives at once and therefore some of them will sit in storage quite some time, thereby creating the need to replace the seals before installation….hence the need to open the lower drive part in the Hanse factory)

We sailed a total of 12.000 more NM with that ‘repaired’ sail-drive and changed the oil 2 times per year…… and still we ended up with a bucket full of ‘aluminum’ paint each time, but the drive continued to work properly.

This year finally the drive started to show signs of failure (slow engage when switching from forward to reverse….) so we asked a mechanic here to take the whole sail-drive out and put in new clutches, bearings and shims.

When opening the drive he found 4 loose bolts ‘traveling’ through the upper unit and they all had found a little place where they could ‘eat’ the aluminum housing bit by bit. The four bolts were part of a family of 8 bolts that secure the main gear on the vertical shaft. It is a total wonder we sailed this long without any catastrophic damage. Who did this? Don’t know…. But must have been a mistake during assembly of the sail-drive (no locktite) at the Volvo Penta factory. This was a very expensive repair and finally urged me to write this post.

My Hanse 505 is like a beautiful woman, she looks great, she sails great…. As for everything else: It’s a total disaster.

If anybody is interested I can post pictures of this sail-drive drama or any other drama you may be interested in. (some of them are already documented in other parts of this forum…)

OK, just 1 example: The broken saildrive with the traveling bolts from the main gear:

First.. this is how the oil looked like during a change... water according to a VP mechanic.... i changed the seals twice.... no effect:

And after opening the drive unit, this is the sludge that we found...

Upon further investigation we found these hidden 'gems'....

And where do these brothers belong:

Obviously these where never 'loctite' in place... from the factory. Another Volvo Penta F...up. Of course 'out of warrantee'

Total damage:

UPPER UNIT PARTS:
5-4-46-7-6-9-11-13-14-15-16-17-18-19-22-12-47-34-35-38-40-42-39-43-45

LOWER UNIT PARTS:
4-5-6-7-8-12-13-14-24-27

And one more example: Corroded Lewmar deckhatches:

At first, when it started (2 or 3 years after buying the boat) i thought it was only a problem with the 2 hatches above the front cabin.....and the hatch on the front deck to the 'sail-locker'.

It wont show from this distance because of the file size limitations of this forum, so lets take a closer look....

Pretty bad.... and then it also started to show up on the bathroom hatches...and not just near the stainless screws... but all over the frame...

And finally all hatches on deck were damaged and then also the cabin side-hatches started corroding....

Upon contact with Lewmar their first remark was:
"well.... you cross oceans with that boat... so what did you expect?"
After extensive discussions they finally agreed to give me new hatches (anodized aluminum.... NOT white powdercoated aluminum, since i am convinced that is the source of the problem) for a substantial discount....
Hanse decided to put white powdercoated hatches in... without testing it, or even realizing that white powdercoated aluminum frames are not corrosion proof (unless you use special paint, which Lewmar in this series did not)
They supplied me with all deck hatches in anodized aluminum, but i do not have a solution yet for the cabin side-hatches.

It seems very unlikely to me i am the only one with this problem, there must be other 505 owners with the same experience....

This really sucks and makes me worry.  I have a 505 and have not had these problems but seems like something I am going to have to worry about in the future.  I will check my windows when I get to the boat this season.  My saildrive has been ok but I will ask the yard about it.  Are you supposed to change the oil on the lower unit each season?

I've had similar issues with my 505 #123. (2016)

- several jeffa autopilot failures (I keep a rebuilt spare on hand and also have a Hydrovane), have a good understanding of what sea state will eventually break it, and manage accordingly
- replaced a sail-drive at about 1600 hours, it was making some awful noises, and we discovered extensive metal shavings/shards mixed in with the sail-drive oil. We suspected loose bolts destroyed the drive, though we never did conduct thorough forensics on this failure. Was advised by VP to replace rather than rebuild. Costly and out of warranty. (Changed the saildrive oil annually, and replaced the seals every 1000 hours or so)
- my D2-75 was installed with improperly torqued oil pan bolts
- the thruster battery tray wasn't built properly by the yard - and collapsed. That was a yard failure.
- panda worked well until it didn't and became unrepairable. Have just replaced it with another brand. Worst piece of kit on the boat.
- my forepeak hatch has some peeling paint and corrosion on it but thus far is cosmetic only. No leaks. I can live with it. Other hatches in good shape, but showing signs of age (8 years year round use)
- I've had several B&G instrument failures and various electronics issues, but we've travelled 26,000+ nautical miles, and I've kept up with things like through hulls, sea cocks, sails, standing and running rigging, batteries, rudder bearings, canvas, upgraded blocks, etc.
I'm not sure my experience would have been much different with another production boat, and overall, the 505 is fast, great fun, still looks good, and serves me well.

Agree ultimately it’s Hanse’s responsibility but most, if not all, the issues raised here are related to 3rd party parts rather than structural / hull / build issues etc. For instance I note Hallberg Rassy used to fit the same Lewmar white powder coated frames, which are now notoriously known to fail (mine at about 3 years). Interesting HR have reverted to anodised (like I have on my 418, with a similarly large discount on replacement parts offered from Lewmar. I wonder if Hanse are still using them? B&G seem to have the new boat market sewn up so I’m sure Hanse aren’t the only brand with these issues, in fact the B&G FB forum is awash with complaints, particularly on radar products and wind instruments

Sorry you have had these issues, but try to love your high maintenance woman for when she is behaving ;) it does sound you have been very unlucky though

Hi JD,

I too have issues with my 505, though not as many as you have. It is interesting to see that you have the exact same issue with your Lewmar hatches as I do, although mine seems even worse:

Who did you speak with at Lewmar? Would you mind sharing that here so I can contact them?

Also, I am having real issues with the Flexiteek 2.0 deck. The problem is twofold. Hanse seems to have done a not very good job installing it, as can be seen amongst other places here:

And then there is an obvious issue with the material itself developing cracks, as seen in these photos:

I have at least 10 of them. At METS Trade I spoke with Flexiteek directly and showed them the photos. They said they had never seen anything like this, which was surprising to me as I know of at least one more person (whose boat (not a Hanse) is only 3 years old) in my marina in Malta who has contacted them about it. They told me to contact Hanse. I spoke with Richard d'Aguiar at Yachting Partners, the Maltese Hanse dealers. He said there was nothing he could do.

Flexiteek has one representative for Malta, but that is a company in Spain. There seems to be no one in Malta who can repair this. I want to do something so my deck isn't going to end up as the one in this video:

Having said all this I do love my Hanse. I think there is abolutely no better boat one can buy unless you are willing/capable to spend at least half a million euros more.

Lawrence

Lewmar hatches:
My contact person at Lewmar was:

George Davies
Tech Support Engineer
Lippert Marine Group Europe

He provided good support and was responsive.
When ordering new frames (i ordered only new frames) i would strongly advise to go with the anodized aluminum frames... not the powder-coated ones.
2 more remarks:
  1. Upon investigation it showed that Hanse made the hatch mounting surface area solid GRP... no balsa... so you don't have to drill/fill/drill the holes with thickened epoxy... and that is a GOOD thing and a sign of quality (lets give a compliment to Hanse....)
  2. Removing the larger frames....I cut the sikaflex (adhesive sealant) under 2 corners of the frame with fishing wire.... then i used the claw of a hammer to lift these corners carefully (while protecting the gelcoat) and then the whole frame came loose without any damage. After removing all old adhesive sealant,  i sealed the new frames with buthyl tape.
Flexiteek:
As i mentioned earlier in my original post, my flexiteek was replaced under warranty, after 2 years. The reason was the same as i see in your pictures. Under the flexiteek there are channels/gutters for draining the water. Flexiteek cannot bridge these gaps in the deck and therefore Hanse used metal strips to bridge these gaps and then glued the flexiteek over the metal strips. Unfortunately on my boat they did not use stainless metal strips but regular steel strips, with the same result as i see in your pictures.
Hanse acknowledged the mistake and offered a replacement of the deck. They took off the old flexiteek, removed the rusty strips, made and installed polyester (GRP) strips and installed new flexiteek. At first there was a little color difference, but after 2 years that was gone.... see pictures below...
