Greetings from sunny CA!
Next week we will conduct a survey on a new 458 in San Diego #253. She has been in the water at least a year and a half, moved around to several shows and about 30hrs on the engine. Our own sea trial went well, noticed some dings to the deck, fiberglass, small flooring/upholstry marks. Taking this extra measure ahead of purchase to address any major underwater issues or commissioning errors. Any suggestions from other owners on where to focus would be hugely appreciated as we can imagine there are common themes with these over the years. Thank you in advance! Brent

A new boat that has only been in shows presents some unique areas to check: 1. The companionway (steps and sole) tend to see a lot of traffic. What is the arrangement from the seller for this? Restoring it to "like new" or "as is"? 2. If its not seen a lot of sailing, then you really want to check for leaks on the hatches, hull windows, and ventilators. 3. Check the bilge pumps for the height where the pump comes on, and that they work - period. Hanse has a tendency to undersize bilge pumps, so you might want to check the size as well. On a 458 I would think the main bilge should be 2000 or 2500GPH. 4. Check the bonding system. Hanse uses "marine brass" (not that I think there is such a thing) and it usually needs to be replaced after a few years with proper bronze, stainless or marlon. The bonding system can contribute to these problems and accelerate any replacements. Resistance between any two points in the system must not exceed one ohm, and if it does understand why. 5. Check the seacocks. Sorry. Hanse doesn't have one piece seacocks. Check the ball valves mounted on marlon thru hulls. Usually they are fine, and they claim to be CE rated, but its not a great setup and my feeling is that these can snap the thru hull if enough torque is applied. There is a checklist many of us have used with dealers and for our own acceptance items. If needed, ask. Lastly, make sure your "acceptance" from the dealer is formal. That you keep a running list of open items, and that its the agreed upon definition of "done". Put things on the list. Mark them done, etc..

It sounds like he has a surveyor lined up. That said, I think we all know there are surveyors and there are "surveyors". Some make a cursory pass at the boat and some do a nice, detailed, thorough job. If they don't do enough, remember that *YOU* pay the price. Things like running the engine under load and making sure the speed and RPMs are right. Doing an engine oil test and looking at the lab results. Looking for delamination in the glass not just on deck but in other critical areas. Before the surveyor shows up, ask to see what they do and what the report will look like. |

Check all the refrigeration and air conditioners. Those have been my weak spots. Also take a look at the deck caulking - mine hasn’t held up real well. Take a good look at the bottom paint - I only got about two years out of my factory paint. Examine the areas behind the aft cabins. There’s a lot of plumbing on port and we had a leak that needed fixing. The engine exhaust is in the starboard side where we had a chafing issue from the factory that required some extra chafe protection.

I didnt have any issues with my new 458 at the time of delivery (and still dont have anything significant after 5 years), but regarding the factory aplied antifoiling that Mike mentioned, I got a big laugh from a local boatyard when I hauled the boat out in Caribbean, they basically said this is not an antifoiling to their standard, likely some environmentally super friendly stuff... I didnt wait and requested sanding and new antifoiling to be reapplied at that time (and every couple of years afterwards)

BTW, I know those dealers in San Diego, they should take care of you well, I flew to their marina back in 2019 to have a look at new 458, as they had one on display at that time. I am in the North, SF bay area. Good luck!

We have a 18 month old 460 (2023) and a previous new 388 (2019).
Check all electrics- the standard Hanse AGM factory setup is not enough we spent US$10k to address this and now have 480 Ah Victron/AGM house batteries plus solar - works well. Check the engine and saildrive for fluid leaks - we had both water and oil leaks Check under the deck joint that the through bolts for cleats, safety posts and pushpit are into the alloy backing plates- some of our missed the plates. Check the anchor is big enough for your use - we had to upgrade two sizes When you have it out of the water consider installing a couple of spare thru hulls for watermaker and deckwash- the standard water tank is small for extended trips. Fuel and water gauges will probably not be accurate - try to get that resolved as it is a frustration. Try to get a free subscription to Sentinel - new boats have one for 2 years ex factory. quite useful if you are away from the marina- monitors bilge pump, batteries, shore power and has all the Manuals available electronically. These are all minor issues so you should have a great yacht

Brent, there are a few professional skippers in this sailing school https://www.clubnautique.net/. They have offices both in Alameda and Sausalito. Get in touch with them, you can either hire a skipper or get their graduates to help you to move the boat.
