With my previous boat, I was accustomed to using an antifouling (Micron). But my previous boat was not very fast.
My Hanse is much faster although I'm not racing. My hull was painted with medium gray self polishing antifouling directly to Greifswald (She arrived at the dealer already painted). I do not know what is the brand of the antifouling.
As I am already planning the new season, what is the best antifouling for a (mainly cruising) Hanse. I usually sail in the south of Holland where cultivated mussels and oysters. In my area, the proliferation of shellfish is a real problem. Last summer, I went to inspect the hull. The saildrive that had not been paint was covered with a mass ofshells. Antifouling What needs to be put on the saildrive? Thank you for your advice. |

I think that HanseYachts normally use International Micron Extra and it works very well in most conditions.
For the saildrive I think International Trilux 33 will do the job. |

I sail in Netherlands aswell. My homeport is on the ijsselmeer.
Our summerholidays we travel over the northsea. This year to Denmark. So the antifouling has to work in salt ond "nonsalt" water. I use micron extra for the hull and trilux for the saildrive. It works perfect. BTW I only paint one layer each year. My boat is in the water from begin of april until end of October (7 month). |

Hi Bruno /Brufan
I use Mille Extra for antifouling on the hull. For the propeller and saildrive I use International's Trilux, which is very effective indeed. See this picture of my KiwiProp. The picture shows the propeller right after my boat was lifted out of the water (no washing done). http://www.myhanse.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=5752&title=trilux-on-kiwiprop Ole, |

The very best "antifouling" I have ever used for the saildrive and propeller is 'Pellerclean' made by Seajet. The kit costs about £45 and comprises epoxy base coats followed by silicon finishing coats. My saildrive and propeller emerge at the end of each season absolutely clean.
In my experience the coating lasts a minimum of three years. There is also plenty of silicon left over should you wish to touch up each year. The £45 kit is sufficient for two or possibly 3 saildrives and propellers, so you could share with other boats. I introduced this product to my Yacht Club 7 years ago and many members have now used it without any complaints. Charles |

I use Hempel Tiger Extra and have very good results. Echo is in the water for eleven months of the year and has just a little slime on the hull when I lift her out. I put the same on the saildrive and use Hempel Mille Drive on the propeller. This is in the Solent and south coast. I know of other boat owners who use International and are equally happy so I guess there may not be any real difference between them. |

Brufan,
I use International Micron Extra, and Trilux on the saildrive, this is after speaking to International paints.... Do International have a local office in your country, in UK there are, I understand numerous test areas around the coast, it could be that the same is true in Holland, and then International could give you accurate information as to what will work in your area.
Just a thought.

Hi,
Micron Extra seems to be a good choice. Unfortunately, we are not allowed to use that in Denmark as far as I know. (Only on boats for export. So you need a special permission). @Steve /Echo of Wight - Are you sure it is OK to use Tiger Extra on the saildrive, which is made of aluminium. I believe that Tiger Extra is similar to Mille Extra, which I am told may not be used on aluminium because of risk of corrosion (it contains copper). I had my boat antifouled with Tiger Extra in Plymouth in 2009. If I am not mistaken it was then sold under the name of "Blakes Tiger Extra", but it was still the same product as Hempel's Mille Extra. But maybe you have got another version? Ole, |

Micron Extra is not allowed in Denmark
![]() I will use International VC17m Extra, and Trilux for the S-Drive. The most regatta yachts use VC17m in Denmark.
