Hanse or Bavaria?

   Hi,

I'm new to the forum and am hoping to gain some advice. 

My wife and I are currently motor boat owners but are changing to sail power. We are, however in a bit of a dilemma. 

We have seen two boats that we like; the Hanse 342 and the Bavaria 33. Does anyone on the forum have experience of these craft? What are the good/bad points of either?

Any comments will be greatly recieved.

	Hello Seaking If you looking on the sailing quality, is there no questions. Here is the Hanse 342 the the best. Hanse is a sailboat Bavaire is a caravan . I think also there is big difference on the building and construction quality. brg Allan

	Asking that question here is like going to No. 10 and asking who should be Prime Minister - there's only going to be one answer. I am a new owner of a Hanse 342. I have sailed for 40 years. Hanse's are a sailor's boat. So far, I'm very happy. My view of Bavarias is based on looking at them at Boat Shows, the way I see them perform on the water and the feedback they get on independent sites like http://www.ybw.com/forums/postlist.php/Cat/0/Board/ym/page/1. They are lumped in with other volume manufacturers such as Jeanneau and Beneteau in people's views. Do a seach for BenJenBav. Personally, Bavaria never had a chance of making my short list. I at least thought about Jeanneau and Beneteau for a few moments. If you want to go sailing, buy a Hanse. If you want a floating caravan to sit on at the weekends and will rarely leave the Marina buy a Bavaria, its probably cheaper - although the Hanse is still probably better. 	Thanks very much for the feedback Ed. I do understand your point that a biased view will proably be recieved from the Hanse site. What I am really interested is an owners view as to what is good about the Hanse, this is proably the best place to do that. So thanks again for your comments it is exactly the type of advice we are looking for. I think at the moment I am slightly leaning towards the Hanse, but need to be sure before spending the money. The Bavaria is a nice boat to look at but it seems the Hanse is a better sail (which of course is what we plan to do with our boat). kind regards, Dan.

	Hie I would like to add that Hanse is better built, stronger constructions all over, better thicker gelcoat, less sikaflex, better finish in the wood-work, rigging on deck is better quality (harken).

	I believe Hanse has now switched to Lewmar gear.....

	Hanse have made the switch from Harken to Lewmar but they haven't completely cleared the Harken parts bins. Scorpio (342#465) has mainly Lewmar gear but the track in the cockpit is Harken! Ed

	Hello Seaking, Welcome to the forum. One last important issue you should not forget is the resale value if you are considering buying new. I suggest you review the relative new price of the two yards similar sized new boats, but then also the sale values of say 3 year old models from both. I believe you'll find the Bavaria prices drop dramatically fairly quickly (way above industry averages) - whilst Hanse tend to hold their own....... It costs enough to run a yacht as it is - but if you also add in what you loose each year by investing in something that devalues quickly - you might well find your annual cost of sailing a Bav is actually more than an annual cost of sailing a Hanse!! Plus length for length, you will find more volume inside a Hanse than you will in a Bav. Good luck with whatever you decide JOHN Edited by John Allison - 12 January 2007 at 07:41
