Round the Island Race 2014

   We have just entered Water Colour (Hanse 400) in the J.P. Morgan Asset Management 2014 Round the Island Race.
Entered for ISC rating - based currently on our Main and ST Jib, although we will be buying an assymetric and maybe a code 0 before the race, so will need to update our entry as appropriate to get the right handicap.

We last did this race in 2008 in a 23ft Sonata in fairly strong winds (F5 gusting F7) and rolling waves (that dwarfed the boat) south of the island, so should be a more comfortable experience this year - it was a blast in the Sonata - especially the 17 mile spinnaker run (with only a couple of broaches), so really looking forward to this year's race.

	Hi Geoff, You may know this already but if not bear in mind that a true code zero will be cut to rate as a spinnaker. If I remember rightly this means that the half height width is atleast two thirds of the foot length. A sail designed differently will rate as a headsail....a very big one and have a negative effect on your handicap. We are going to run an open house week prior to the race where you can bring your Hanse to the Hamble and our engineers will come and make sure everything is in order prior to race day. There will be no charge just a good service to Hanse owners. We will get in touch will all UK owners shortly to promote it officially. Kind regards Phil

	Thanks Phil I think we will have a 'cruising Code 0' rather than IRC compliant 'racing Code 0' - but I'm still learning, so put me right if I'm talking rubbish. It sounds like you are saying that it will either be counted as a large headsail or spinnaker, but whilst we may take a hit on handicap (either way) we are thinking the Code 0 will give us good upwind performance in light winds, whereas we might be going nowhere with the STJib. Similarly, the Assymetric is for downwind performance as the ST jib is ineffective downwind. As I say, we are novices with the H400 so welcome any advice from more experienced owners. And to put it into context, whilst we are doing the RTIR and maybe occasional club racing, we essentially want to have a set of sails suitable for cruising, and in particular, easily manageable short handed cruising. We believe that complimenting the main and jib with a furling asymmetric and furling code 0, both on Karver top down furling system gives us this option. All comments welcome Thanks Geoff

	Hi Geoff Well worth looking at the Furlstrom from Elvstrom. It is code zero esque and you can hold them up to about 45 degrees apparent in circa 12 knots apparent. A really impressive light wind sail The furlstrom is nylon rather than laminate so not quite as stiff as a true code zero. If you are going for an assymetric as well you might as well go for a laminate code zero and make the best of the light wind, upwind options. You will learn loads from a chat with Jeremy at Elvstrom on 02380 450430. You may need a deck mounted bow sprit on a 400 to operate effectively Kind regards Phil

	Hello Geoff, As i understand it you can go for irc or an island club handicap. If irc, a non-measuring code 0 is not a good idea because you will get hit too much in handicap, so if you are going irc then get a measuring one. For your deep asymmetric i woudn't bother with the top down furler, we tried it and its better to get a couple of young blokes on the foredeck, pull out the jib to de power the kite, send one guy down into the forepeak and pull the kite down behind the jib straight down the hatch. Just my experience, but the top down furlers take an age to furl (unlike the sails with the luff line sown into the sail) and in strong winds they tend to get messed up which is just when you need them. good luck though, it will be a great experience M

	Thanks Mark Definitely not racing IRC, we are ISC rating Thing is, the sails need to be manageable with self and wife for cruising. We are prepared to sacrifice some race performance for cruising ease of use. We will only race very occasionally. Geoff

	So... we have ordered a code 0 and asymmetric spinny from Kemp, who offered great advice and seemed very knowledgable - they really seemed much more helpful than the rest ( we also spoke to North, Hyde, Jeckells, Crusader, Doyle, Goachers, and a couple of others) both sails to go on a Karver KSF4 top down furler - we researched it to death and the Karver top down furler seems to be better thought of than any other furling system, especially for ease of use when short handed. I think we are done! Hopefully we will get new sails in time for some practice before the RTIR race in June I don't know what ISC class we will be in - does it depend on the size of the new sails? I completed the entry with main and ST jib, but will notify new sail measurements when I have the details. Any other Hanses taking part in RTIR? Our plans beyond the RTIR are to spend summer on South and south west coast using MDL marinas where possible, Solent in June for RTIR, July in Brixham, maybe go as far as Plymouth, then Aug / Sept back to Solent and return Chatham Maritime towards end of summer Would be great to meet any Hanses on our travels Geoff

	Hi Geoff, We are doing the RTIR, but it is a different Island... We are competing in the Isle of Man version, I understand, that most racers take between 22 to 25 Hrs.. Our race starts from Port St Mary on Sat 24th May, then back after back to Douglas to watch the TT for a day or so. Good Luck
