I guess I have my answer. I found another view on this post, showing that the bimini frame passes behind the backstay so I guess it must fold backward only.

Hello Owen,

We made our own design and devided the bimini in two parts.

One small part for sailing, above the steeringwheels (see picture).

The second part we use when docking. Zipp it on the bimini and the other side we connect with three lines, one to the boom and two to the safety railing. Like a tent (see picture).

When it rains you just put up the sprayhood, fits underneath the tent without any changes.

Thanks for the photos movimiento, I really like your design - Bravo! Here are a few observations, please let me know if I missed anything:

1. I like the sailing position - some shelter for the helmsman but still looks like a very good view of the sails.

2. Meanwhile, at dock you have very good coverage of the whole cockpit.

3. It looks like it mounts on the pushpit rail too, so the installation is quite simple (and no added clutter on the deck)

4. Looks very lightweight and compact to store.

It looks like you have a 430 while ours is a 400 but I can apply the same principles you used.

Hello Owen,

Yes you can apply this to your 400, we had the same construction on a First 45. The size of boat does not matter.

To add to your list; the bimini frame is kept in balance and tention on the cloth is given by four thin lines, two on each side. Even in strong winds (tested in 50 knots, we forgot to folde it) the small bimini holds perfectly. And also when it rains you have some shelter behind the wheels.

You can folde the frame together by removing the lines and put an bag around the colth and the frame. And if the cloth is taken away just pull out one pin on each side and you can remove the frame totaly.

The cloth on the bimini also has a zipper on the back, so you can use the tent on the back side when the sun is standing low and shining from the back into your cockpit.

Hello Owen,

This is a picture of the bimini stowed on the backstay. It folds on each side of it.
The bimini is very useful and comfortable....when mooring!
But too large to sail with, when the wind is over 8-10knt. It is also a bit of a struggle to fold it when one has forgotten to do and the wind is growing up.
After a couple of month of sailing between the French Med and the French west coast, I founded better to stow the bimini before departure....
