Hello,

I think you compare not in a correct way. What you try to compare is the so called "?Sailcarrying Numer ?" German: Segeltragezahl.

If you compare a Hanse 312 with the Oceanis 323 or a Bav 32 you have to take the maximum sail area. With the Hanse you can carry a regular Genua 1 with about 33sqm.

Regards Thomas.

Hi all,

It is all very well to compare the above specifications and I agree you have to BUT, line up all of the yachts mentioned with equal crews and I know that the Hanses will out sail them with ease.

Then you can talk about construction, quality[not perfect but better than the rest by a mile] and what about ease of sailing,we race on Wednesday afternoon against fully crewed boats just two up and always end up at the front of the fleet in any conditions.

Good sailing

Rob

I totally agree with Rob. Racing is always fun with just 2 pers. against fully crewed ships. You must see their faces if they see that you are only sailing with 2. And if you sail fully crewed and the ship is tip top for racing you can see on de Hanse greifswald site the results. All the Dehlers 39 and x yacht 36 are behind the smaller Hanse 341

So it is just a case of what you are willing to do. Better sails, more crew or just fun and end up somewere in front with a smile on your face.

Happy hunting for the first price you all!

I have bought a 311 in 2002 and have raced and cruised it for 2.1/2 seasons. She is a very good sailor and the last two series I did I came 2nd overall in both. I would buy her again if I were to buy a new boat.

When you race your 311 what type of boat speed do you get?   I have hit 7.5 knots in my 311 and I think it can go faster if I trim the sails right.

I want to get into racing where I am at and I have a PHRF rating of 156.  In the San Francisco Bay Area here are some of the other PHRF ratings.

Hanse 311     156

Catalina 30   180

Catalina 34    147

Beneteau 310   132

Hunter 31    156

And what this means is if your rating is 156 and you race a Catalina 30 with a rating of 180 you would have to give him 24 seconds per mile.  So in a 5 mile race you would have to beat the Catalina 30 by 121 seconds to win.

I am surpirsed the Beneteau 310 is so fast but I do know they are very light.  And for San Francisco Bay they are not enough boat.  When I go out in the ocean off of San Francisco in 25 knots of wind and 3-7 foot seas I don't see many Beneteau's out there!!
