I think the standart white transom bench to be supplied with the boat (see the picture on page 10) is very similar to new Beneteau First 40. Who copied from who ???

That transom bench makes sense on the First. Look at the space between the bench and the wheel. It’s huge. It is a boat designed for a crew, and racing is the essence. So lots of space for several crewmembers to move around. The bench is there only for protection and for the looks. Now, that bench that fits properly on the First fails to provide, on the Hanse, another seating position. After all the Hanse is a cruising boat and a boat adapted to a small crew or to be solo sailed and having a single seating position on a cruising boat doesn’t look very practical or comfortable to me. |

Well, with a small crew there is little need for additonal seats, right
I think the standard bench is a great improvement from a safety point of view. Personally I didn't feel safe facing rough seas from behind with only two wires behind my back. Also for cruising I do value having space to move around behind the wheel. The previous version had too little space with the optional bathing platform installed IMHO.

After all discussions and exchange of information, finally I was visiting the ongoing Boot Dusseldorf show to order my new boat and I had a chance to see Hanse 400 there for the first time. There was no bench on the show boat but I saw some of the latest photos of the transom bench. It is same as the one posted in 10th page of this topic but additionally they put teak on top of the bench similar to cockpit bottom. The guy I talked to (probably one of the German dealers) told me the bench is an extra option. Apart from that I found the stbd aft cabin quite large but lack of storage and shelve facilities. It is like a big empty cold space, especially at the hull side of the cabin which is covered by wood but a nice shelve would be quite efficient there. I found the lay up and interior quality not really satisfying but from the outside it seems very sportive. The cockpit table is also not my type, especially with that cost !!! I could not understand why they do not put a fiberglass-wood combined table like the French boats. All stainless steel and plexiglass made table looks not really very handsome on a white fiberglass boat. Edited by Easy_Diver - 20 January 2009 at 15:25 |

Hello all,
New member to the forum, new Hanse 400 owner, in fact generally a newbie so its been great to follow the threads on the forum. I suspect that on the whole we'll have much to learn from you all - so I'm glad that for my first post I can perhaps offer some information. My 400 was delivered the week before Christmas - without the transom beam which was expected. With the holidays and the London Boat Show its understandably taken until last week to deliver it. Having started to get used to the boat without, I was surprised that my first impression was that it was a great improvement - indeed better than I'd originally expected. It is curved in a way that the previous photos here don't show, so actually looks quite nice. To me, the overall visual effect is that encloses the stern without taking away from the space of the cockpit. As a 'seat' its not going to be an armchair - but it provides a useful and not-uncomfortable perch. The only discomfort comes from the wires above it. However, particularly on the port side where I found the backstay generally in the way of sitting to the aft of the side bench, it does give another option. Its removable to provide access to the bathing ladder etc. For us it still needs a little adjustment before its fully installed, but the principle is a single draw bolt on each side. I'm uploading a couple of photo to show it as best I can. Looking forward to knowing you all better through membership of the forum, James Mojo. Hanse 400 #565 ![]() ![]()
