Hi
personally i see no reason for a seat aft, I as like to sit on the side when steering. But i see the benefit of "closing" the aft. This solution does not look good to me. 1. Where do you store this in a good way, when removed (i.e in port) 2. if ment to be used as a seat while steering, the distance from the seat, to steering are long. seems like you need long arms (might be wrong) 3. The construction seems weak. This will be a safety barrier, when mounted. Seems like it is fastened with only 4 small screws in stead of bolts (might be wrong). I also suspect that you will experience cracks in the "seat" as there will be movements in this area. Specially if the fit is to tight. This was not very positive, and I hope I'm wrong! |

Good questions - I don't know all the answers.
1. Our mooring in the UK is generally alongside. Therefore having side gates is really usefull, and the problem of how and where to store the beam will most likely arise in the summer when swimming (and this is the UK so that isn't going to be too frequent!). The effect of closing the aft is probably more psychological - but I like it. 2. The distance from the beam to steering is quite reasonable - normal arms will suffice. However I agree that on some points of sail, or for comfort, sometimes sitting on the side will be best. This gives a choice... 3. Mine is still in the process of being fitted by the dealer so isn't a factory fit. That said the 4 screws are actually fairly big bolts (10mm I guess from memory) and there is also an adhesive there - so the mounting plates aren't going anywhere. The way that the beam itself fits to those plates is with bolts, but as I said that's not fully finished yet. I've no idea how it will stand the test of time with regard to cracking etc. It appears fairly solid - but I'll let you know after a season... |

Mojo,
Yes if you could come back and let us know how it stands the test of time, as I almost upgraded my 301 to a 400 this year, but held of due to current sitation, but it would be useful to know.
