The rubber seal around one of the portlights has come off and I don't know the proper cure for it. I don't even know how it was attached in the first place. Glue? Glue would be the way I would try to put it back but would like to ask if anyone has solved a similar problem before or has a better suggestion.

Had the same problem 2 years back. I used glue, but don't remember the type. Just put the seal in place with the glue and closed the portlight to get some presure while drying. Sine then it has been in place. However, not longer allowed for kids to pull things in and out of the portlight

Contact glue didn't work but I have friends that have recommended this: http://www.hatchmasters.com/product_info.php?cPath=205&products_id=180&osCsid=356998c896a013e73e2de0e2bec233c3" rel="nofollow - http://www.hatchmasters.com/product_info.php?cPath=205&products_id=180&osCsid=356998c896a013e73e2de0e2bec233c3 . I might try it and will let you know if I am happy with it. Johan

After having been in contact with Lewmar, this is the seal I need: http://www.lewmar.com/products.asp?id=8728&lid=24807" rel="nofollow - http://www.lewmar.com/products.asp?id=8728&lid=24807 . It's quite expensive, though.

Are you sure the portlight is by Lewmar? And will the portlight not come apart to enable you to relocate the seal and rebuild, as the ones on my 341 do? Mine are a dutch make and replacement parts are a lot cheaper, I also believe better quality than Lewmar. I don't have the details with me but I will be down on BH later this week and can send you the details if that helps?

I am sure that the portlight is by Lewmar as it is printed on the acrylic. However, I am not sure whether the seal needs to be replaced but that's what I am told. My thinking is that in ten years time the rubber gets dry but I might be wrong.

I would suggest "automotive trim adhesive". It is used to secure rubber window seals on automobiles and should hold up to weather and salt. It should be easily available at most automotive stores. Sold in squeeze tubes, black, and quite inexpensive.

Or use Tec7: http://protex.dk/?product=tec7" rel="nofollow - http://protex.dk/?product=tec7
It's like Sika 291, but maybe better here??
(Remember to buy the Tec7 cleaner (spray) also, if you need to smooth out the stuff with a finger. Otherwise it is quite sticky).

Seeing that I started this thread three years ago I have finally got around to order a new seal and try to fit it. It is bloody impossible!
So now I have put gaffer tape across the opening for the window. I am a bit pissed off.

Johan,
Sorry to state the obvious but have you asked the manufacturer of the seal or the window how they recommend you do this? You may be pleasantly surprised.

No, I just threw myself on the floor and yelled, as I always do!
Well, I have written an email asking if there is a proffessional who could do it for me. I'll let you know how it all ends.

Aha, it is the inside rubber seal that is causing problems, so no sika or gaffa should be necessary.
Well, I would probably have changed the whole unit or bought a new boat
I guess Lewmar has no instruction video on how to do it?? I know that Jabsco Marine has for several of their products. It came in useful when I changed the toilet pump recently. Anyway, since our boats are nearly the same age, I am very interested in hearing how things work out

Hi Johan
It's not quite the same, as it is an instruction video for replacing the seal on a medium sized hatch (maybe the same as on our boats). But, just maybe, there are some details, which could be relevant in this case also.
See the video here: http://www.lewmar.com/Video" rel="nofollow - http://www.lewmar.com/Video
(It is the one about replacing the rubber seal).
Just a thought

Ole, perhaps I should just buy a new boat. Or a new portlight! The portlight is 210 Euro and I have already spent 58 Euro on the seal!
The video unfortunately only shows how to replace a seal that is fitted to the acrylic. The portlight seal is mounted on the frame. You are supposed to fit a very small rim on the seal into a groove on the frame.

Johan,
Does it perhaps need the little rubber edge sliding into the grove assisted by a little bit of silicone or furniture polish spray?

Rob, I will try that. I will also have to remove all the old silicone but it is difficult as the groove is so tiny.

There is a little plastic tool available for forcing a gasket into a small groove. That being said, I recommend using a rubber or vinyl cleaner/lubricant twice a year on all gaskets. It keeps them flexible, dirt free and, most important, helps with the porthole/hatch seal so there is no water intrusion.

Going back in time I recall there used to be a tool for pushing the plastic trim into car window frames, so perhaps this tool Silver Sailor mentions is something the manufacturer of the seal can supply? There is a company I have seen at UK boat shows who manufacture a variety of rubber seals, they are called Wilks and are very helpful, so maybe they can advise. They show a tool for window rubber on their web site - https://www.wilks.co.uk/marine/accessories/window-rubber.html
If you are unable to find assistance nearer to home, from Wilks, or from the supplier of the seal that you have perhaps an email to them could help?
I an surprised the seal supplier or manufacturer does not supply a guide or a tool to install as I can imagine it is no easy task, even with the grove liberally coated with a silicone lub or furniture polish spray.

There is actually a guide, but it doesn't make a lot of sense to me: uploads/463/Portlight_New_Standard_Seal_Replacement.pdf" rel="nofollow - Portlight_New_Standard_Seal_Replacement.pdf
To me, not being a handy person, this problem is a hard nut to crack. The temporary solution (see below) is not very appealing.

It looks to be a simple job from the instructions but generally these things are from the point of view of the person writing these. Having said that from the picture of the seal profile and the description of replacement I would have thought application of a silicone lubricant along the grove then just push the seal squarely into this should achieve the desired result. Perhaps you are trying to hard? If this fails perhaps a thin round object such as the curved hook section of a metal coat hanger, if you can find one applied to the edge of the seal with a 90 degree bend, which is intended to fit the grove could work. If all else fails I have some white gaffer tape that would look better.
Just had a rather radical thought, why not take the seal and the frame to the place you got the seal from or your local Lewmar agent and say you show me how its done!
Good luck.

I gave up. I bought a new portlight. My dealer was kind enough to let me return the seal and get the money back.
It feels a bit awkward to replace the entire portlight just because the seal had got old and it cost me 170 Euro too, but at least the problem is fixed now. If you look at the first post in this thread this is a problem I've been meaning to fix for three years!
As soon as the weather permits I will remove the glue residue and polish the gelcoat. As you can see in the picture, tonight is not the time to start such a project.

I am glad you find this thread useful, Alessandro.
Here's another thing: the portlight comes with two types of acrylic glass, clear or tinted. I thought mine was clear so I ordered that as it was also cheaper. I now realise that the old acrylic was the darker version. I however like the clear glass as it makes the aft cabin brighter. Now, as I still have the old acrylic I can choose between the two if I like.

Hey Johan,
do you still have the correct part number of the port lights in the forward cabin? The printing on the acrylic on my boat is so thin that some numbers have totally disappeared and my dealer is desperate...
Thanks!
