IMPORTANT !!! The thread in Yanmar SD50 is BSPT and NOT BSPP. The difference is, that BSPT is "Tapered" or conical (British Standard Pipe Tapered). Use the advanced search function (mark "any date") and I believe that you will find, that "Bäsk" had to use a tool to widen the thread from BSPT to BSPP when he mounted the bronze fitting. https://myhanse.com/raw-water-inlet-stopcock_topic8221_post104776.html?KW=SD50#104776 It is possible to buy a Stainless Steel A4 1 inch BSPT/BSPP fitting. You can then use a ball valve in SS or from Trudesign. Kjeld Edited by Captain Cook - 17 April 2022 at 17:57 |

Captain,
Thank you for all your posts. You can see I read a lot of them - ive thanked you for many. Im about to haul out of the water to fix the leaking sail drive. So Ill be replacing seals and i thought while i am at it, i can dispense with that blasted SD50 gate valve stopcock and replace it with aftermarket. I have read many posts. I have consulted yanmar and they want either your first born and $1,000 for a SD50 gate valve, or $600 for a SD60 ball valve. Im sitting between buying a Vetus bronze ball balve ($100) or a true design ($100). I am stuck however when it comes to finding a BSPT to BSPP nipple. Im reluctant to use 316, as i dont know if i will be setting up a corrosion point for something. I note both the Yanmar options have bronze connecting into the said drive housing. I wonder if there is such a beast as a bronze BSPT to BSPP nipple.

In: https://www.myhanse.com/new-seacocks-thruhulls_topic10598.html you can read this: "Stainless steel AISI316 (A4) is better than MS58, but in 2-5 years come pitting and fissure corrosion." I used the A4 because I expected it to last my lifetime :-) My brother-in law is a plumber, and he states, that the succesion of the metals are very important corrosion-wise. So, there must be a professor, engineer or plumber, in the myhanse universe, who can advice if the succesion ..... seawater IN -Alu-SS(A4)-nylon-plastic-copper-plastic-iron-plastic---seawater OUT is corroding the A4 stainless steel? /or the SD50 :-( (The ions in the seawater are expected to steal electrons from the A4/316L) The succesion of metals/plastic are SD50 through my fittings in the photo above and going through a copper seawater-pump which has 12V negative engine earth. |

I bought an SD60 seacock here https://discountmarinesource.com/store/index.php?route=product/search&search=196460-02400
It has the same threads as the SD50 but is a ball-valve and has worked out great for me. I paid US$107, I see it is now $118. Pretty cheap in "boat bucks".
